You Were There

Gallery signage becomes an opportunity to undermine the predictable and work within viewers’ expectations. These writings are introspective lures distributed all over the MFA Thesis Show at the Sullivan Galleries to create subtle, surprise encounters. While we often expect language to communicate with a clarity and certainty, these signs blur this boundary to create moments of uncertainty, and reflection.

Borrowing from the straight forward visual system of wayfinding, this piece seeks to defamiliarize by instead presenting open, ambiguous fragments of text.
